'Hug of death' asbestos case ACC win is too late for victim

17:05, Jul 08 2019

A woman who contracted a deadly asbestos condition through hugging her father when he came home from work has won a posthumous accident compensation battle.

Deanna Trevarthen, 45, was among the youngest in New Zealand to die from mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer directly linked to asbestos.

Her estate continued the fight and in a decision issued on Monday a High Court judge has said Trevarthen does qualify for ACC cover after all.
